"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently feature them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to form a group."

"So all are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
